Sheridan:

1. History.
Back to American history. Two weeks ago we looked at the Spanish-American War. When the battleship Maine blew up in Havana Harbor, the newspapers in the US started blaming the Spanish and calling for war on Spain to free Cuba. The war took place in areas. First, in the Atlantic, in and around Cuba. Second, in the Philippines. In Cuba, future president Teddy Roosevelt led the Rough Riders. In the Philippines, Admiral Dewey became famous for his attack on Manila harbor. The Spanish were brave, but their ships were not as good as the Americans.

This excellent page describes the Battle of Manila Bay in the Philippines.

A key outcome of the war was that the US got its first overseas colonies, the Philippines, from Spain. After that we invaded the Philippines, whose leaders thought the US would make the independent. Read this account of the path to war between the US and the Filipinos. Tomorrow we'll look at the invasion of the Philippines by the US.
